The Common Good Cyber initiative is a collaborative effort aimed at galvanizing action to strengthen the Internet’s resilience. Unlike most other services that are a critical part of our lives, like roads and electric power, the Internet relies on people and nonprofits working on shaky ground and razor-thin budgets. The initiative will formally kick off at the first Common Good Cyber Workshop in Washington, DC on February 26-27. This initiative brings together governments, private sector, academia, and civil society to collectively address immediate and long-term challenges to the availability and security of the Internet. Common Good Cyber is coordinated by the Global Cyber Alliance, and the driving forces behind the initiative are the Cyber Threat Alliance, CyberPeace Institute, the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), the Institute for Security and Technology (IST), and the Shadowserver Foundation.
Founding Principles
The belief that safeguarding the Internet is a shared responsibility that transcends geographical and sectoral boundaries is the founding principle of Common Good Cyber. The current funding and operational models for developing and maintaining core Internet capabilities are unsustainable and require urgent attention. Common Good Cyber will drive collaboration and action by pooling expertise and resources to fortify the foundations of the Internet and its delivery globally, working to ensure its availability and security for generations to come.
Key Objectives
- Global Collaboration: Promote effective collaboration between governments, the private sector, academia, and civil society to collectively support core capabilities of the Internet.
- Resource Mobilization: Channel support towards nonprofit and public interest organizations dedicated to preserving the availability and security of the Internet.
- Sustain Cybersecurity Capacity-Building: Drive efforts to ensure the longevity and scalability of cybersecurity capacity-building initiatives on a global scale.
