As we prepare to delve into potential solutions for delivering cybersecurity to high-risk actors, we are delighted to introduce the esteemed speakers who will guide us through this enlightening discussion. The panel discussion on “Growing the Capacity of Network Defenders” will be moderated by Michael Daniel and highlight what works and what doesn’t with regard to the deployment of available tools in helping high-risk actors improve their security.
Meet our Speakers
Moderator: Michael Daniel
Michael Daniel leads the Cyber Threat Alliance (CTA) team and oversees the organization’s operations. Prior to joining the CTA in February 2017, Michael served from June 2012 to January 2017 as Special Assistant to President Obama and Cybersecurity Coordinator on the National Security Council Staff. In this role, Michael led the development of national cybersecurity strategy and policy, and ensured that the US government effectively partnered with the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and other nations.
Rocky Cole
Rocky Cole is the co-founder and COO of iVerify. He previously served as Senior Program
Manager at Jigsaw, a unit of Google, where he incubated early stage technologies to promote
an open, free, and safe internet. His work ranged from helping journalists detect generative AI to
designing innovative user experiences, informed by cognitive science, to harden Google
surfaces against misinformation.
Carla Baker
Carla is a Senior Director of Policy & Government Affairs at Palo Alto Networks, where she is responsible for driving the company’s public policy agenda in the UK and Ireland on a broad range of issues, including cyber security, privacy, and wider technology policy. She is also a Trustee of the UK Cyber Security Council, a member of the Scottish National Cyber Resilience Advisory Board and Vice-Chair of techUK’s Cyber Management Committee.
Ruairi Nolan
Ruairi Nolan is Deputy Programme Director for Amnesty Tech, part of Amnesty International, where he has worked on numerous investigations into the use of targeted surveillance against civil society, together with a team of technologists and human rights researchers. Prior to joining Amnesty International, Ruairi has over two decades experience working in human rights and peacebuilding.
Oktavía Hrund Guðrúnar Jóns
Oktavía Hrund Guðrúnar Jóns is a Senior Advisor with Quad9, a non-profit recursive DNS resolver. Prior, they spent two decades at the intersection of digital security, privacy, accountability and human rights across countries, sectors, and cultures. Oktavía served as the COO and Head of Incident Response at SecureIT, a full-suite compliance and security company. They have provided consultation services and conducted audits and assessments in security and privacy worldwide and is a recognized Senior Holistic Security Advisor.
Geoff Hunter
Geoff Hunter joined OCCRP in May 2022 as chief information security officer and became chief technology officer later that year. He oversees OCCRP’s technical and security functions and, with his team, ensures that our services and data are kept protected and confidential, while also keeping our staff and partners digitally safe. Geoff has over 25 years of experience in IT operations, service delivery architecture, and security across the public and private sectors in the U.K., New Zealand, and Australia.
